La vie en Rose

What would Raf Simmons do?

As an unabashed follower of haute couture, that was the question on my mind before Mr. Simmons’ first show as creative director at Dior. Will he able to fill the rather large pointy-toed-shoes left behind by Galliano (overrated according to me, and the drunken anti-Semitic remarks didn’t go down that well either...I see Karma at work there?), or would The House of Dior begin its slow decline into blah-ness, just like what happened to Gucci after Tom Ford left (Tom Ford – well, that’s a different blog entry altogether, and it won’t be about the clothes he makes ;) ).

Well, as we all know, Raf wowed us all with his stunning creations, but what really really took my breath away was the runway set! Rooms upon rooms, covered in flowers from floor to ceiling, almost like a cubist Alice in Wonderland (to be precise, a million blooms, from 22 different kinds of flowers).

As a purveyor of all things fantastic and beautiful, I did a little research, and found out these stunning floral walls were created by Brussels based florist Mark Colle, but of course, calling him just a florist is like calling Raf Simmons just a tailor (haven’t we all heard that before?)

So, here are some images from that magickal Dior show, along with a show he did for Jill Sanders (much more modern, and equally lovely). I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

La vie en Rose indeed.....

LESSON IN ART APPRECIATION

Due to the nature of my work, I get to research many artists. A casually dropped name during a meeting would have me scrambling to get on Google(Pinterest is current favourite at the moment). I thought it would be a good idea to appreciate one of such artist's work once a week. Do you guys concur?

Imagine an entire island off the coast of Miami surrounded by bubblegum pink fabric; an imposing brilliantly orange curtain rising up like a dream from from a Colorado valley; the Reichstag wrapped up like a toy house under a giant’s Christmas tree...

These are not narratives from a fantasy or a science fiction book, but real life, towering installations created by the husband –wife artist duo of Chriso & Jeanne Claude.

Only having seen images of their work, I can imagine the visceral reaction they must evoke when seen in person. And what most fascinates me about their work is ephemerality of it all; the years of planning and hard work, the countless million of dollars, to create something which they know is not going to last long. For example, the valley curtain I mentioned above was up only for 28 hours. In Christo’s words, “..... I think it takes much greater courage to create things to be gone than to create things that will remain."
Though they have had their fair share of controversy and criticism; from the environmental impact of their installations to freak accidents, I think it’s essential they carry on, so others can get to imagine, and see, the world in a different way, even though it might be for just 28 hours

CAKE OF THE DAY

Good Morning Baltimore....Oh, oh, oh woke up today feeling
Feeling the way I always do, Oh, oh, oh hungry for something that I can't eat, Then I hear that beat....
I have a huge sweet craving since the moment I woke up (I guess the after effects of  multiple-double-vodkas and skipping meals). So I wanted to share a picture of this beautiful cake. One must check out their website.  It is charmcitycakeswest.com. They have the most beautiful cakes. Just wish they were closer (you guessed it, they are based in Baltimore). Sigh...Have a fabulously sweet day everyone!

 SEPTEMBER

And we are back in business – yet again!
Forget spring renewal; it’s the smell of fresh-off-the-press September issues that rejuvenates us, puts a ‘spring’ in our step, and fills our hearts with joy (and mostly envy looking at the wonderful latest season things which we can’t afford).
However, we promise to be more regular from now on, and not let the Delhi gloomy winter nor the alcohol soaked Diwali and Christmas and New Year parties distract us.
Hope you enjoy these super-glam September covers, and they help you put a spring in your step and a dent in your wallet.
And bookmark us – there are many more wonderful things in the offing in the near future!
